Defining carrying
capacity and baseline data on watersheds
Combining the most
current understandings in historical assessment, such as
nitrogen sampling of lakebeds and organics, supplemented
with archeology and cultural anthropology (historical
records, interviews with elders and retired managers)
offers a means of cross-examining data and builds a
model that can be more readily supported by both
scientists, managers and communities they serve.
Assessing current
conditions of the salmon run and the watershed (current
watershed conditions may not support historical run
size) is critical in developing an achievable and
realistic restoration/augmentation
plan.
Identifying
subpopulations within a watershed system is necessary
for determining if repopulation of prime yet
underutilized spawning habitat exists.
